Abstract

This study addresses the role of the clinical pharmacist in the follow-up of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, highlighting its importance for patient safety and the quality of healthcare. Antineoplastic chemotherapy is a complex treatment involving highly toxic drugs, a narrow therapeutic margin, and a high risk of medication-related problems, such as drug interactions, adverse reactions, and failures in treatment adherence. In this context, the clinical pharmacist plays a fundamental role in prescription review, toxicity monitoring, patient counseling, and prevention of risks associated with pharmacotherapy. This is a literature review study with a qualitative approach, based on the analysis of scientific articles published in national and international databases. The results show that the clinical pharmacist contributes to the reduction of medication-related problems, improvement in treatment adherence, early identification of adverse events, and strengthening of multiprofessional care in oncology. It is concluded that this professional has significant relevance in the follow-up of patients undergoing chemotherapy and is essential for promoting the safe and rational use of medicines and improving therapeutic outcomes.
