Abstract

Pneumonia remains one of the leading causes of infant morbidity and mortality globally, representing a serious public health problem, especially in regions of socioeconomic vulnerability, such as the Northeast of Brazil. This study aimed to analyze the epidemiological profile of hospitalizations due to pneumonia in children under one year old in the state of Paraíba, Brazil, between 2019 and 2024, evaluating aspects of morbidity, mortality, average length of hospital stay, and financial impact on the Unified Health System (SUS). This was a descriptive study with a time series and spatial design, utilizing secondary data extracted from the SUS Hospital Information System (SIH/SUS) for the established period. The results revealed a total of 8,575 hospitalizations for pneumonia (ICD-10 J18) in children under one year old in Paraíba, with a predominance of the male sex (58%). The average length of hospital stay was 6.4 days, and the hospital mortality rate reached 1.21%. In terms of financial impact, hospitalizations in this age group generated a total cost of R$ 9,906,626.81 for the SUS, representing 12.27% of the total expenses analyzed. It was concluded that hospitalizations due to pneumonia in infants in Paraíba constitute an important indicator of the fragility of Primary Health Care (PHC) and social vulnerability. The findings emphasize the urgent need to strengthen PHC, focusing on preventive measures such as adequate immunization, promoting exclusive breastfeeding, and improving child development follow-up (puericulture), aiming to reduce avoidable hospitalizations and improve child health indicators in the state.
