PLAYFUL TECHNOLOGIES AND ADHERENCE TO DIET THERAPY IN HOSPITALIZED ELDERLY

Abstract

Population aging is a global reality that leads to an increase in chronic diseases and hospital malnutrition, estimated at up to 55% at the time of admission. The objective of this study was to analyze, through a bibliographic review, the impact of using playful technologies and gamification on adherence to diet therapy in hospitalized elderly with chronic comorbidities. The methodology consisted of a bibliographic survey in the PubMed, SciELO, and Scopus databases, covering the period from 2014 to 2024, focusing on gamification strategies and serious games applied to clinical nutrition. The results indicate that playful tools increase intrinsic motivation and knowledge retention by meeting psychological needs for autonomy and competence, according to the Self-Determination Theory. The discussion points out that such technologies overcome the barriers of low health literacy, facilitating the understanding of complex dietetic procedures. It is concluded that playful technological innovation is an effective disruptive strategy to mitigate malnutrition and optimize the engagement of both the patient and the caregiver in the clinical recovery process.
