Abstract

The multidisciplinary approach in neonatology has proven essential for improving the care and clinical outcomes of newborns, especially those who require advanced support, such as the use of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC). PICC insertion and management in newborns require precise coordination between different specialties, ensuring not only the effectiveness of the treatment, but also the minimization of the risks associated with this complex procedure. This study is an integrative literature review, carried out according to the following steps: 1) elaboration of the research question; 2) bibliographic survey; 3) data evaluation; 4) data analysis – division, exposure and comparison; 5) presentation of results. A survey was carried out through the electronic library through the Virtual Health Library (VHL), and the following databases were selected: Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences and Database in Nursing. Therefore, the descriptors consulted in the Science and Health Descriptors were used, namely: “Peripheral Catheterization” and “Newborn”, using the Boolean operator AND between the descriptors when combined. They received a quantity, being: BDENF (73) and LILACS (99). It is essential that the care provided by the multidisciplinary team to the newborn using PICC proved to be crucial for obtaining positive clinical outcomes and minimizing risks associated with the procedure. The data collected indicate that collaboration between neonatologists, nurses, pharmacists, radiologists and other health professionals resulted in a significant reduction in complications, such as infections and thrombosis, highlighting the importance of an integrated and coordinated approach. Thus, effective management of PICC in newborns depends on the integrated collaboration of a multidisciplinary team, where coordinated work between physicians, nurses, pharmacists, radiologists and the active participation of families are essential to ensure the safety and success of the treatment.
