Abstract

Introduction: Fibromuscular dysplasia of the renal arteries (FMD) is a condition characterized by non-atherosclerotic and non-inflammatory stenosis of the renal arteries, often resulting in hypertension. Objective: To review the treatment of fibromuscular dysplasia of the renal arteries, focusing on medication therapy. Methodology: An integrative literature review was conducted by searching databases for articles relevant to the proposed topic. This included evaluating eligible articles and excluding those that did not meet the study's objectives or were duplicates. Results and Discussion: The review results indicate that most patients with multifocal FMD require continuous antihypertensive therapy, even after revascularization. Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) are the medications of choice due to their effectiveness in modulating the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. Conclusion: t emphasizes that managing fibromuscular dysplasia of the renal arteries through medication therapy is essential for the effective control of hypertension and the prevention of renal complications. A medication-based approach, supported by evidence and careful monitoring, provides a viable and efficient strategy, improving clinical outcomes and the quality of life for patients with FMD.
