Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Gastric and duodenal ulcers are lesions in the mucosa of the stomach and duodenum, respectively, frequently caused by Helicobacter pylori infection and prolonged use of NSAIDs. This study analyzes hospitalizations for these conditions in Brazil between 2019 and 2023, investigating variations in prevalence, diagnosis and treatment. Understanding these trends is essential for formulating prevention strategies and optimizing public health resources. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to quantify and analyze hospitalization rates for gastric and duodenal ulcers in Brazil. METHODOLOGY: The retrospective study with a quantitative approach used data from the SUS Hospital Information System (SIH/SUS), provided by the SUS Information Technology Department (TABNET/DATASUS). The analysis covered hospitalizations for gastric and duodenal ulcers in Brazil from January 2019 to December 2023, using descriptive statistics and tabulation in Microsoft Excel 2016 and Microsoft Word 10 spreadsheets. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Between 2019 and 2023, 2,746,944 hospitalizations were recorded for gastric and duodenal ulcers in Brazil, with significant variations between regions. The Southeast Region had the highest number of hospitalizations, totaling 1,046,417 cases, followed by the Northeast Region with 708,690 cases. The lowest number was recorded in the Central-West Region, with 218,962 hospitalizations. The year 2023 had the highest number of cases, totaling 678,020 hospitalizations. These data highlight the need for regional public health strategies to address these conditions. CONCLUSION: Therefore, data on hospitalizations for gastric and duodenal ulcers between 2019 and 2023 show significant regional variations in Brazil, influenced by population density, access to healthcare and the impact of the pandemic. The increase in hospitalizations in 2023 highlights the need for adapted public health policies, aiming to reduce regional disparities, improve healthcare infrastructure and optimize access to treatment across the country.
