The objective of this study was to conduct a scoping review of the literature to identify and map research reporting on the dispersion, impacts, and remediation of radionuclide contamination sources. Searches were performed in the Web of Science (WOS) and Scopus databases using structured search strings with descriptors linked by Boolean operators and applying the Population, Concept, and Context (PCC) strategy to formulate the guiding question and establish eligibility criteria. The study employed the methodology outlined in the JBI manual for scoping reviews and followed the PRISMA-ScR protocol steps for reporting results. Database searches identified 52 studies (filtered as Open Access) published between 2001 and 2025, comprising 6 sources from WOS and 46 from Scopus. After applying eligibility criteria, 26 of the retrieved sources were selected and supplemented by 6 previously obtained articles, resulting in a total of 32 studies for qualitative analysis. This review mapped how radioactive elements can contaminate the environment, animals, and humans, revealing a gap that indicates a lack of research on this topic in Latin American countries.
Keywords: radionuclides; environmental monitoring; radioactive contamination; radioisotope; environmental impact; scoping review.
