Abstract

Changes in nutritional status, such as weight loss and malnutrition, emerge as key clinical features during the progression of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, with a prevalence ranging from 16% to 53% among patients; its impact on survival has been discussed since the 1990s. The objective of this integrative review was to synthesize evidence regarding the impact of nutritional status on mortality in patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. A literature search was conducted in the PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, LILACS, and SciELO databases using descriptors related to the topic. The selection process followed a PRISMA framework adapted for integrative reviews, resulting in a final selection of 16 studies. Results from most studies indicated that a decline in nutritional status reduces survival in people with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, with only two studies showing no such association. These findings highlight the importance of early nutritional monitoring from diagnosis to maintain or improve patients' nutritional status, avoiding delayed interventions and improving survival outcomes.
