Abstract

Introduction: Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is a treatment often used to alleviate menopause symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats and mood changes. It consists of administering female hormones, estrogen and, often, progesterone, to compensate for the natural decrease in these hormones during menopause. Although HRT can offer significant benefits, such as improving quality of life and preventing bone loss, it is also associated with risks, including an increased likelihood of cardiovascular disease and hormone-dependent cancers. The decision to start HRT should be carefully considered, taking into account individual benefits and potential adverse effects. Objectives: To evaluate the benefits and risks of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) during menopause, analyzing its effectiveness in relieving symptoms. Methodology: The research was carried out through online access to the National Library of Medicine (MEDLINE), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO), Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS) databases in the month of August 2024. Results and Discussions: Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) has been shown to be effective in reducing menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and sleep disturbances, as well as helping to maintain bone health. However, the associated risks, such as an increase in cardiovascular disease and certain types of cancer, were significant, particularly with long-term use. The discussion points out that HRT should be individualized, considering medical history and personal risk factors, and recommends a continuous assessment of benefits and risks to optimize treatment and minimize adverse effects. Conclusion: Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is effective in relieving menopausal symptoms and preventing bone loss, but it also has significant risks, such as cardiovascular disease and hormone-dependent cancers. The decision to start HRT should be based on a careful assessment of individual benefits and risks, and treatment should be adjusted as necessary to ensure the best quality of life with the lowest possible risk.
