Abstract

Burns are skin injuries caused by direct or indirect exposure to heat. This heat can come from various sources, such as direct flame, contact with water or other boiling liquids, hot surfaces, electricity or chemical substances. These injuries can affect various organic structures and are classified into degrees according to the depth of damage to the affected tissues. These characteristics are fundamental in defining the treatment to be applied and also make it difficult to obtain accurate epidemiological data. Given this, it is essential to identify the prevalence rate and epidemiological characteristics of hospitalizations for burns in the State of Alagoas, making a comparison between genders, in the period from 2019 to 2024. This study is a descriptive and retrospective epidemiological survey that used available secondary data in the TABNET/DATASUS system of the Ministry of Health. Thus, when analyzing data on hospitalizations for burns in Alagoas between 2019 and 2024, a predominance of males was observed, aged between 30-49 years, in Maceió, with a emergency. Therefore, when analyzing the relevance of the topic and the results obtained, the findings of this study point to a greater need for public policies aimed at the specific population, with the aim of strengthening health services for emergency care, carrying out continuous education of health professionals and reduce the incidence of these injuries in the State of Alagoas.
