Abstract

This narrative review of the literature gathered articles from PUBMED aiming to indicate the causes of ischemic acute abdomen, as well as its clinical manifestations, diagnostic and therapeutic approach. Ischemic acute abdomen is a serious medical emergency characterized by the interruption of blood flow to the abdominal organs, leading to ischemia and, eventually, tissue necrosis. With a high mortality rate, especially in late diagnoses, this condition mainly affects elderly patients with cardiovascular comorbidities. Causes include arterial or venous obstruction, and non-occlusive ischemia related to prolonged hypotension. Early diagnosis, using exams such as angiotomography, is essential for immediate intervention, which can be clinical, endovascular or surgical. Mortality is high, and the prognosis depends on the time to treatment and the extent of necrosis. Postoperative rehabilitation can be complex, especially in cases with short bowel syndrome, requiring a multidisciplinary approach to improve the patient's quality of life.
