Abstract

Objective: Evidence of the applicability and main benefits of transurethral resection of the prostate as a treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia. Methodology: This is a systematic and qualitative literature review, carried out during the month of August 2024, through targeted research in the scientific databases MEDLINE and Virtual Health Library, through the combination of DeCS/MeSH descriptors with the use of the Boolean operator “and” between the terms, as represented below: “Ressecção Transuretral da Próstata” and “Hiperplasia Prostática Benigna” and “Transurethral Resection of Prostate” and “Prostatic Hyperplasia”. Results and Discussion: After the research process in the listed databases, MEDLINE and BVS, 12 studies were selected to compose the article. These were chosen, organized and analyzed, according to pre-established criteria, with the aim of determining the applicability of transurethral resection of the prostate as a surgical treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia. Final Considerations: Transurethral resection of the prostate is associated with a significant improvement in the storage and voiding symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia, although it is not the method of choice for large prostates.
