Abstract

Introduction: Kidney transplantation represents one of the greatest advances in modern medicine, being considered the treatment of choice for patients with end-stage chronic renal failure.

Methodology: To collect data, a systematic search was carried out in the main scientific databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and SciELO. The keywords used in the search were "kidney transplant", "advances in kidney transplantation", "kidney transplant challenges", "long-term results in kidney transplantation", "immunosuppression", "chronic rejection" and "quality of life post-transplant".

Result: Advances in immunosuppressive therapy are one of the pillars of successful kidney transplantation. The introduction of medications such as cyclosporine in the 1980s revolutionized transplant management, drastically reducing acute rejection rates.

Conclusion: In conclusion, kidney transplantation continues to be a life-saving intervention and significantly improves the quality of life of patients with chronic renal failure.
