Abstract

Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is an illness caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). This virus attacks the immune system, specifically affecting white blood cells, responsible for the body's defense. Over time, HIV destroys these cells, leading to clinically significant immunosuppression. Objective: To identify the epidemiological profile of HIV/AIDS cases in the State of Alagoas, from 2019 to 2023. Methods: Data were obtained by consulting the SINAN (Notifiable Diseases Information System) databases. After obtaining the data, a statistical analysis was performed, including the calculation of values, distribution and percentages. To interpret the results, illustrative graphs and tables were created. Results: This study revealed that, during the period from 2019 to 2023, 1,649 cases of AIDS were reported in Alagoas. There was a progressive increase until 2021, followed by a sharp drop of 64%, resulting in 147 cases in 2023. There was a predominance of males, in people aged 40 to 49 years old with complete secondary education. Conclusion: Therefore, this study highlighted that throughout the years of the epidemic, there were significant advances in the treatment of HIV/AIDS; However, there is still a persistent need for targeted public health interventions, considering variations in gender, age and educational level to effectively combat the AIDS epidemic in the state.
