Abstract

Introduction: This article reviews the clinical manifestations of Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC) in adults, a chronic liver disease characterized by inflammation and fibrosis of the bile ducts. Objective: To highlight the diagnostic complexities and variability of symptoms, which can range from asymptomatic to debilitating. Methodology: An integrative literature review was conducted by searching databases for articles relevant to the proposed topic. Eligible articles were evaluated, excluding those that did not meet the study's objectives and without accounting for duplicates. Results and Discussion: The discussion addresses the prevalence of symptoms such as pruritus and fatigue, as well as associations with inflammatory bowel diseases and challenges in early diagnosis. Elevation of alkaline phosphatase and the presence of autoantibodies are frequently observed, but their clinical relevance requires further investigation. Conclusion: It emphasizes that Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis presents varied clinical manifestations, ranging from asymptomatic cases to debilitating symptoms. The recognition and appropriate management of these manifestations, especially in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases, are crucial for improving prognosis and reducing severe complications.
