Abstract

Introduction: Diarrhea is characterized by frequent bowel movements, which may be liquid or softened, and is the second leading cause of death among children under five years old. Additionally, it accounts for one-third of hospitalizations in this age group. As a result, these children may suffer from malnutrition and dehydration, the primary causes of death, due to reduced appetite and increased loss of water, electrolytes, and nutrients. Objective:To profile the epidemiology of mortality due to diarrhea and gastroenteritis among children and adolescents in the state of Alagoas from 2018 to 2022. Methods:This is a retrospective, descriptive, quantitative study using DATASUS.

Results:The study revealed 351 notifications of deaths due to diarrhea and gastroenteritis in Alagoas between 2018 and 2022. The most affected age group was 28 to 364 days, corresponding to the postnatal period, with 13.39% (n=47). Conclusion:The results highlight the need for further investigation into variables related to diarrhea and gastroenteritis. Deaths were more common among males, individuals of mixed race, and those under 1 year of age.
