Abstract

Introduction: Meningitis is an infectious disease that causes inflammation of meninges and subarachnoid space. It is a relevant concern for public health in the country due to high rates of morbidity and mortality, as well as the serious neurological complications that can cause. Objective: To describe the socioepidemiological profile of notifications and mortality from meningitis in Brazil, from 2019 to 2023. Methodology: Observational, cross -sectional, descriptive study, through the survey of epidemiological data, obtained from the Unified Health System Department of Informatics Department (DATASUS), in the subsections of the Information System on Notification Information System (Sinan). The absolute and relative frequencies of the variables applied and selected in the Sinan tab to elaborate the study were calculated: “Notification Region”, “sex”, “age group”, “race/color”, “etiology”, “case evolution And “serogroup”. Results: Between 2019 and 2023, 59,787 cases of meningitis were reported in Brazil, the year of highest incidence and the lowest incidence 2021. The largest number of males, white, was observed in the age group of 20 to 39 years and in the Southeast region. Regarding the evolution of the disease, most patients evolve into hospital discharge, while 9.95% have the deadline. In addition, serogroup C is largely responsible for infections and viruses are the main etiologies. Conclusion: Mapping of the epidemiological characteristics of meningitis is extremely important for the creation and adoption of new strategies aimed at reducing cases of the disease in Brazil.
