Introduction: Carotid stenosis is a vascular pathology characterized by the narrowing of the carotid arteries, secondary to the deposition of atherosclerotic plaques. These plaques, composed predominantly of lipids, calcium and inflammatory elements, lead to the reduction of the arterial lumen and compromise cerebral blood flow. Methodology: The review was performed in the Virtual Health Library (BVS) and PubMed. Original articles available in full and free of charge in Portuguese and English were included. The exclusion of articles was done based on the reading of the title and abstract, selecting those that were related to the objective. Results: Adopting healthy habits and balanced diets, such as the Mediterranean diet, can significantly reduce the risk of stroke and infarction. Antiplatelet therapy is important to prevent thromboembolic events, especially in patients with carotid stenosis. Revascularization may be beneficial for symptomatic and moderate carotid stenosis in some cases. Conclusion: Prevention and treatment of vascular diseases require a multifaceted approach. A combination of healthy habits, appropriate treatment and medical interventions is essential for effective management of vascular diseases.
