Abstract

The article critically examines the legal-philosophical thought of Alf Ross (1899–1979), a central figure in Scandinavian legal realism. Drawing on a methodology that combines conceptual analysis and historical-philosophical reconstruction, it explores the author’s key contributions, such as his critique of methodological dualism, his neo-empiricist conception of legal knowledge, his theory of validity grounded in behavioral and psychological elements, and his distinction between norms and normative propositions. It argues that Ross developed a sophisticated form of legal realism—one capable of reconciling methodological rigor with an awareness of the complexity of legal phenomena. Finally, the article highlights the contemporary relevance of his work for debates on the interplay between facticity and normativity, as well as for the critical analysis of legal language and concepts.
