Abstract

Modern medical care faces the challenge of treating patients with life-limiting illnesses, where a cure is not possible, and the focus must shift to relieving suffering and improving quality of life. This study analyzes the importance of humanized palliative care in medical assistance, focusing on the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of patients and their families. The aim is to demonstrate how patient- and family-centered practices can improve quality of life. A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines, using the databases PubMed, Scopus, Medline, and Cochrane Library, covering the period from 2010 to 2023. Keywords included "Palliative Care" AND "Humanization," "Quality of Life," and related descriptors. Initially, 367 studies were identified, of which 55 were read in full, and 8 were included in the final analysis after exclusions based on specific criteria. The results show that effective communication and building trust are crucial to maintaining hope and improving quality of life. Education in palliative care improves patients' quality of life. Integrated policies and evidence-based practices are necessary for the global advancement of palliative care. Additionally, specific training for emergency professionals and an integrated approach are fundamental. Thus, the early introduction of palliative care and humanized interventions are essential. It is concluded that humanized palliative care is essential to provide comprehensive and compassionate care, relieving physical suffering and offering emotional, social, and spiritual support, significantly improving the quality of life for patients and their caregivers.
