Abstract

Clinical pharmacy is the pharmaceutical specialty responsible for the rational use of medications, carried out by pharmacists. In the hospital setting, the importance of professionals trained in this field stands out due to the high morbidity and mortality rates observed in this context. The clinical pharmacist must be able to work in a multidisciplinary manner, plan and contribute to effective patient pharmacotherapy, analyze prescriptions with regard to technical and ethical aspects, provide pharmaceutical consultations with privacy, and prevent and intervene in incidents related to medication use. Likewise, hospital pharmacy promotes the rational use of medicines, in addition to enabling cost savings in the acquisition of drugs and other health products. Based on the above, it is concluded that clinical and hospital pharmacy are interrelated branches of Pharmacy, generating resource savings and greater safety in the use of drug therapy. Therefore, the presence of professionals with such training is essential in the hospital environment.
