Abstract

Introduction: Burnout can be characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and low job satisfaction. Intensive Care Units are a hospital environment intended for those who require specialized care and continuous monitoring by a multidisciplinary team. This scenario requires uninterrupted and personalized attention, which makes this environment prone to intense physical and psychological pressure. Objective: to analyze the levels and factors associated with psychological exhaustion among health professionals working in Intensive Care Units. Methodology: This is a narrative review of the literature operationalized through the descriptors in health sciences: “psychological exhaustion”, “intensive care units” and “health personnel”, connected through the Boolean operator “AND”. Results and discussion: After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 10 studies were selected to compose this review. It is worth noting, at first, that the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant influence on the increase in psychological exhaustion among health professionals, especially those working in ICUs. The levels and factors related to psychological burnout vary according to the region and working conditions. Conclusion: healthcare professionals in intensive care units face multiple challenges related to psychological burnout.
