Abstract

ABSTRACT

Preterm birth is one of the most significant challenges in maternal and child health, accounting for high rates of neonatal morbidity and mortality and long-term repercussions throughout childhood. It is estimated that prematurity is associated with multiple maternal factors, many of which are preventable, including socioeconomic vulnerabilities, preexisting diseases, substance use, psychosocial stress, nutritional deficiencies, infections, inadequate prenatal care, and structural inequities. The objective of this study is to systematically review the main maternal factors associated with preterm birth, focusing on preventable causes, and to analyze early and long-term repercussions on child health. This narrative review is based on scientific articles, international guidelines, and classical literature on prematurity. The results demonstrate that prematurity has a multifactorial origin and must be understood within a biopsychosocial framework, in which interventions aimed at women’s health, strengthening prenatal care, and reducing inequalities are essential. It is concluded that integrated and multidisciplinary actions are essential to reduce the incidence of preterm birth and improve the quality of life of affected children.
