Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is one of the major obstetric complications, characterized by the loss of 500 mL or more after vaginal delivery or 1000 mL after cesarean section. It can rapidly progress to shock and death, requiring immediate intervention. The most common causes are described as the "4 Ts": tone (uterine atony), trauma, retained tissue, and thrombin, with atony being the main etiology. This study conducted a narrative review in databases such as BVS, Medline, and PubMed, seeking evidence on prevention, risk factors, and management. The results highlight the importance of prenatal care in identifying risks, as well as the active management of the third stage of labor and the appropriate use of uterotonics to reduce the incidence and severity of PPH.
