Abstract

SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION IN EARLY CHILDHOOD AS A CULTURAL RIGHT: BODY, PLAY, COMMUNITY COEXISTENCE AND CLIMATE JUSTICE

ABSTRACT

Early childhood is a central stage of human development, characterized by the formation of bonds, identities, and ways of understanding the world, deeply mediated by bodily experiences and play. In this perspective, this article analyzes school Physical Education in early childhood as a child’s cultural right, articulated with the rights to education, culture, leisure, and family and community coexistence. The objective is to discuss how the body, play, and bodily practices are configured as constitutive dimensions of childhoods, especially in contexts marked by cultural diversity and socio-environmental inequalities. Methodologically, this is a theoretical-reflective essay, based on a narrative literature review and the analysis of legal and normative frameworks related to children’s rights, interculturality, and climate justice. The discussion highlights that intercultural pedagogical practices in school Physical Education contribute to the recognition of plural childhoods, the strengthening of community bonds, and the promotion of comprehensive protection. It also emphasizes that the climate crisis and environmental inequalities directly affect children’s opportunities to play, move, and access safe spaces for coexistence, demanding territorialized public policies and educational proposals. It is concluded that, by recognizing the body as a cultural language and play as a foundational practice of childhood, Physical Education can function as a strategic space for guaranteeing rights and promoting social and climate justice from early childhood onward.
