Abstract

Burns constitute a significant public health problem, being associated with high morbidity and mortality rates and a substantial impact on the quality of life of affected individuals. Given the limitations of conventional treatments, new therapeutic approaches have been investigated, with particular emphasis on the use of Nile tilapia skin (Oreochromis niloticus) as a xenograft. The present study aimed to analyze the scientific evidence regarding the therapeutic potential of tilapia skin in the treatment of burns through an integrative literature review. The search was conducted in the PubMed, LILACS, and BVS databases, using controlled descriptors and Boolean operators, and included full-text studies addressing the use of tilapia skin in humans. After applying the eligibility criteria, four articles comprised the final sample. The results showed that tilapia skin acts as an effective temporary biological dressing, promoting wound healing, reducing pain, decreasing the frequency of dressing changes, and demonstrating good adherence to the wound bed. However, the studies also highlighted limitations related to the lack of standardized clinical protocols and the need for research with greater methodological robustness. It is concluded that tilapia skin presents promising potential as a complementary therapy in the management of burns, and further studies are required to consolidate its safe and effective clinical application.
