Abstract

The excessive use of smartphones has been the subject of various assessments. In light of this, the literature has undertaken initial efforts to investigate a phenomenon called nomophobia, the irrational fear of being disconnected due to lack of access to technology or the internet. In this context, the present work aims to investigate which variables influence the level of nomophobia in undergraduate students in Administration and Accounting courses at a Federal University. Thus, the academic performance index (GPA), age, gender, semester, course withdrawals and failures, and their possible relationships with nomophobia were evaluated. A quantitative approach was used. Therefore, Factor Analysis (Exploratory and Confirmatory) and statistical tests such as Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis, and correlation analysis were employed. The main findings showed that the entire sample presents some level of nomophobia, with a prevalence of moderate levels. Furthermore, the research is relevant as it addresses a topic that requires more attention in the business field.
