Abstract

Introduction: Acral melanoma is a subtype of melanoma skin cancer that affects palmar, plantar, and subungual surfaces. It accounts for about 2-8% of melanomas white individuals and 20-30% of melanomas in non-white individuals. It is more frequently diagnosed in women over 50 years old and has a worse prognosis compared to superficial melanomas, mainly because it is often diagnosed in more advanced stages. Method: This research was made by a survey study. A structured questionnaire with 28 multiple choice questions was administered to 43 gynecologists. This questionnaire was applied in the gynecology departments of Mater Dei and Vila da Serra hospitals in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, from November 2024 until February 2026. Objective: This research aims to evaluate the potential of the Gynecology and Obstetrics specialty in aiding the early diagnosis of acral melanoma in women, considering that mainly the physical examination of gynecological patients occurs in lithotomy position, which helps the evaluation of the plantar region. Results: Among the participating physicians, 83.7% believe that the specialty can contribute to the early diagnosis of acral melanoma in women; only 7% regularly examine the plantar region of patients; 14% feel comfortable identifying possible lesions of plantar melanoma; 16,3% ask their patients to remove their socks during the gynecological examination; only 2.3% have received specific training on melanoma; 67,9% believe that including the evaluation of the soles of the feet in the physical examination can assist in the early diagnosis of acral melanoma, and 76,6% are interested in acquiring knowledge on the subject. Conclusion: According to this study, we can conclude that if gynecologists receive adequate information, routine physical exams in their practice can indeed assist in the early diagnosis of acral melanoma.
