Abstract

Spinal anesthesia, also known as spinal anesthesia, is a regional anesthetic technique widely used in various surgeries, especially in procedures below the abdomen. This approach offers numerous benefits, including rapid anesthetic induction, hemodynamic stability, and lower risk of respiratory complications compared to general anesthesia. However, the practice of spinal anesthesia also presents significant challenges, such as the potential occurrence of hypotension and post-dural puncture headache. Objective: Explore and analyze the application of spinal anesthesia in surgical procedures, highlighting its advantages and challenges. Methodology: The Cochrane, Scielo and Medline databases were used, searching for articles published between 2023 and 2024, in Portuguese or English. Final Considerations: Spinal anesthesia is valued in surgical practice for its rapid induction and lower respiratory complications compared to general anesthesia. However, it presents challenges such as hypotension and post-dural puncture headache. Thus, the success of this technique depends on the skill of the anesthesiologist and the effective management of adverse effects, as well as investing in continuous education and research is essential to improve the safety and effectiveness of spinal anesthesia.
