Abstract

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are characterized by a set of signs and symptoms involving the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and associated structures, functionally impacting patients with dentofacial deformities. Correction of these deformities through orthognathic surgery has been reported to modify the occurrence and intensity of TMD signs and symptoms. The aim of this study was to synthesize evidence on the influence of orthognathic surgery on the signs and symptoms of temporomandibular dysfunction. Clinical studies suggest that the prevalence of TMD can be reduced after orthognathic surgery, although some patients may maintain or even worsen their symptoms. The methodological diversity among the studies highlights the need for standardized diagnostic approaches in future research.
