Abstract

Introduction: The incidence of heart disease is increasing every year in developed countries and despite major advances in treatment, heart surgery is still considered the best method for many patients. SSIs in cardiac surgeries are serious and of great economic impact, the infectious outcome after surgery is favored by multiple interrelated factors that cover care aspects from the pre, trans and postoperative periods. So, the objective is to analyze the occurrence of surgical site infection in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Methodology: Retrospective, descriptive and documentary study with a quantitative approach. We selected medical records of patients who underwent coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) from January 2020 to March 2021. Data collection took place through analysis of medical records. Data were tabulated and organized in Microsoft Excel 2017 spreadsheets, later analyzed in absolute and relative frequency, measures of central tendency and chi-square test. Results: During the study analysis period, 305 CABG heart surgeries were performed, of which 33 had signs and symptoms of infection. The comorbidities with the highest incidence were SAH and diabetes. The main microorganism isolated was S. Aureus. The most used antibiotics were vancomycin and meropenem, respectively. Conclusion: The occurrence of infections in cardiac surgeries in the analyzed period was 11% of the total, mainly in older men. Organ and cavity infections are more delicate and had a greater number of isolated microorganisms, symptoms, antibiotics used, and also the majority required surgical re-approach, indicating the complexity of this type of infection, while superficial infections were less severe.
