Abstract

This study analyzes the benefits of sports initiation in football for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder - ASD. ASD is characterized as a neurodevelopmental condition, defined by deficits in communication and social interaction, presenting restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, and activities. With the growing prevalence of the disorder, there is an increasing demand for therapeutic and educational interventions that contribute to the comprehensive development of these children. In this context, the practice of physical activity, especially participation in collective sports such as football, has been recognized in the literature as a strategy that contributes to developing various skills, among which motor and social skills in children with ASD. The aim of this study was to investigate the benefits of sports initiation in football for children with ASD. The method used was a narrative literature review, which is characterized by a broad and contextualized view of the subject in question. The approach is based on the analysis and critical interpretation of selected literature. The results indicate that sports initiation in football with adaptations brings multiple physical benefits, stimulates neuropsychological functions, improves psychomotor performance, and strengthens social competencies. It is concluded, therefore, that adapted sports initiation programs in football are an important and complementary tool in formative and therapeutic intervention for children with ASD. Although the benefits are evident and the practice is considered promising, due to the limited number of studies found, the conducting of future practical research with more representative samples is recommended. It is also important that these studies evaluate the feasibility of the sport for children at all three support levels. Scientific advancement in this area is fundamental to consolidate football as an effective therapeutic and pedagogical tool with a view to promoting the comprehensive development of this population.
