Abstract

Healthy eating habits are closely related to the management of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) and Hypertension (HAS), two significant public health issues in Brazil. The study aims to educate patients about dietary changes and how a balanced diet can help prevent or delay complications associated with these comorbidities. The activity was carried out at a Basic Health Unit (UBS) in the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte, involving 20 elderly participants, using discussion groups and educational materials. Results showed that participants had difficulties in maintaining appropriate eating habits. However, following the intervention, there was a better understanding of nutrition and its implications for health and comorbidities. It was concluded that lack of information and socioeconomic factors contribute to unhealthy eating habits among patients with DM and HAS. The intervention proved effective in enhancing the population's knowledge about the importance of diet in managing these comorbidities.
