ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION ACTIONS CARRIED OUT IN PUBLIC SPACES IN THE CITY OF RECIFE: CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SUSTAINABILITY-ORIENTED CONSCIOUSNESS

This study aimed to assess sustainability consciousness among adult participants in environmental education activities developed at the Econúcleo da Lagoa do Araçá, in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil, considering the dimensions of knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. The research is grounded in the Brazilian National Environmental Education Policy, Education for Sustainable Development, and the 2030 Agenda, while also drawing on the contributions of Paulo Freire and Edgar Morin to understand critical, dialogical, complex, and territorially situated educational processes. It is also supported by the literature on the measurement of sustainability consciousness, especially the short version of the Sustainability Consciousness Questionnaire (SCQ-S). Methodologically, this is an applied quantitative study with a survey design. Data collection took place from December 2025 to February 2026, through an online questionnaire administered to adults who participated in activities carried out at the Econúcleo in 2024 and 2025, resulting in 34 valid responses. The analysis included descriptive statistics and verification of the internal consistency of the scale. The results indicated higher scores in the dimensions of knowledge and attitudes than in the behavioral dimension, suggesting a greater consolidation of cognitive and value-based aspects of sustainability than of self-reported everyday practices. The findings reinforce the relevance of the Econúcleo as a non-formal space for awareness-raising, participation, and territorial mobilization, in dialogue with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, especially regarding quality education, sustainable cities, ecosystem protection, and the strengthening of partnerships. It is concluded that the transition from reflection to action depends on continued educational processes, institutional support, and concrete conditions for community engagement.
