Introduction: The prevalence of anxiety and depression in Brazilian society has been a growing concern due to its significant impact on public health. These conditions affect millions of Brazilians, interfering with their quality of life, productivity, and overall well-being. Recent studies indicate a high incidence of anxiety and depression disorders, making it essential to understand the factors contributing to these mental health issues.
Methodology: To investigate the prevalence of anxiety and depression in Brazilian society, a systematic literature review was conducted. Data sources included recognized databases such as SciELO, PubMed, and Google Scholar. Articles addressing the prevalence, risk factors, and consequences of these disorders in Brazil were selected. The analysis included epidemiological studies, cross-sectional research, and public health data collected over the past ten years.
Results and Discussion: The results indicate that the prevalence of anxiety and depression in Brazil is alarming. Approximately 9% of the Brazilian population suffers from anxiety disorders, while about 6% deal with depression. Factors such as social inequality, urban violence, and lack of access to adequate mental health services were identified as significant contributors. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated these disorders, increasing stress levels and social isolation. The discussion emphasizes the need for more effective public policies and investments in mental health services to address this issue comprehensively.
Conclusion: The high prevalence of anxiety and depression in Brazilian society highlights the urgency of effective interventions. It is crucial to implement policies that improve access to mental health care, promote awareness, and reduce the stigma associated with these disorders. Collaboration between the government, health institutions, and civil society is essential to tackle this public health challenge. Investing in prevention and treatment programs can significantly improve the quality of life for Brazilians affected by anxiety and depression.
