Abstract

Traffic accidents constitute a significant public health problem, contributing to high rates of morbidity and mortality, as well as to the occurrence of maxillofacial injuries that impair essential functions and negatively affect individuals’ quality of life. In this context, this study aimed to analyze the relationship between traffic accidents and maxillofacial trauma, identifying risk factors, injury patterns and clinical implications, with emphasis on the context of Manaus, Amazonas. This is a literature review based on the analysis of recent scientific studies addressing epidemiological aspects, trauma mechanisms and factors associated with injury severity. The findings revealed a predominance of young male victims, a higher incidence of mandibular fractures and a strong association with motorcycle accidents. It was also observed that behavioral factors, such as alcohol consumption, excessive speed and the lack of use of safety devices, significantly increase the severity of injuries. In addition, early and multidisciplinary care was associated with better clinical outcomes. It is concluded that maxillofacial injuries resulting from traffic accidents are strongly related to preventable factors, highlighting the need for preventive strategies, traffic education and strengthening of public policies aimed at road safety.
