Abstract

The mental health of children and adolescents directly influences cognitive, emotional, and social development, potentially affecting school performance. Problems such as anxiety, depression, stress, and behavioral difficulties can compromise learning, attendance, and students' continued presence in school. Thus, the study aimed to analyze scientific evidence on factors related to schoolchildren's mental health and their impact on academic performance. This is an integrative literature review conducted using the PICo strategy to formulate the research question. The search was carried out in the PubMed, Virtual Health Library (BVS), and EMBASE databases, using descriptors related to mental health, students, and school performance, combined through the boolean operator AND. Full articles published between 2020 and April 2025, in Portuguese, English, and Spanish, that addressed the relationship between mental health and academic performance of students were included. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria and analyzing the selected studies, 10 articles composed the final sample of the review. The results showed that different factors related to mental health are associated with impairments in academic performance. Among the most frequent conditions were depression, anxiety, stress, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, neurodevelopmental disorders, and emotional and behavioral difficulties. These factors were related to problems with concentration, learning difficulties, increased absenteeism, grade repetition, age-grade distortion, and higher risk of school dropout. Furthermore, the findings indicated that the family, social, and economic context, as well as the presence of poorly structured school environments or ones with low psychosocial support, can intensify psychological distress and worsen its impacts on the educational process. It is concluded that mental health has a significant influence on school performance, making it essential to strengthen early identification actions and psychosocial support in the school environment to promote the integral development of students.
